In 2018, the Suzuki Foundation created the first specialised service for babies and children with disabilities in the Buenos Aires province of San Miguel, Argentina. This Bebeteca, the only one in the country, serves more than 60 families annually, bringing reading, art and play to families and young children with disabilities. The programme works to address the isolation, inequality and exclusion of families with disabled children and provides opportunities for strengthening early childhood growth and development.
The Bebeteca, a Spanish word for children's library, was launched as a separate room at the Suzuki Foundation containing a library and space for activities. The collection was carefully chosen to meet the specific needs of little ones aged 45 days to 3 years, and their parents. The multi-functional space is available for story times to stimulate children’s development, creativity and imagination, and for activities providing professional advice and support to parents. The Bebeteca staff train families to become reading mediators and to encourage literary, artistic, and recreational enjoyment, so parents can participate in activities at the Bebeteca to later implement at home. Around 40 families attend weekly.
In 2019, the Bebeteca launched a mobile project to take its services into institutions working with children in vulnerable situations such as health centres, child development centres, maternal and infant gardens, and others. In that same year, the Mobile Bebeteca travelled 5 times and had about 15 families visiting on each occasion.
When asked about the benefits, Viviana, a mother of twin daughters, shared the impact of the Bebeteca on the development of her twin girls: “From the day when Abril and Valentina were born, I worried that they will not be able to speak or express themselves. After a year or so of going back and forth to hospitals, the diagnosis was disappointing. This changed in April 2019, when we met with the interdisciplinary team from the Suzuki Foundation.
At 1 year and 8 months, the development of the twins was far behind their agemates. They could not say more than ‘dad’ or ‘mom’ and if someone touched them, they began to cry.
Every Monday, we spend the last 20 minutes of the early care session at the Foundation in the Bebeteca. There, the girls look for a book they like. The teacher reads them a little and then they take it home. The same with toys, stuffed animals, and puppets. Before sleeping the girls say: ‘Book, book’, and I read to them. And when they cry, I read the story to them, and they calm down.
On their own, the girls started leafing through the books and saying the names of the animals and copying their sounds. Having materials such as books and stuffed animals helps them to think and ask questions."
The Bebeteca enriches and expands the Suzuki Foundation’s educational offer of early childhood development and services, educating and engaging children, empowering and giving hope to families and parents. For its work, the Bebeteca was recognised as one of Argentina’s Libraries in Action, 2018.
En 2018, la Fundación Suzuki creó el primer servicio especializado para bebés y niños con discapacidades en la provincia de Buenos Aires de San Miguel, Argentina. Esta Bebeteca, única en el país, sirve a más de 60 familias anualmente, llevando lectura, arte y juegos a familias y niños pequeños con discapacidades. El programa trabaja para abordar el aislamiento, la desigualdad y la exclusión de las familias con niños discapacitados y brinda oportunidades para fortalecer el crecimiento y el desarrollo de la primera infancia.
La Bebeteca se lanzó como una sala separada en la Fundación Suzuki que contiene una biblioteca y un espacio para actividades. La colección fue elegida cuidadosamente para satisfacer las necesidades específicas de los pequeños de 45 días a 3 años y sus padres. El espacio multifuncional está disponible para la hora del cuento para estimular el desarrollo, la creatividad y la imaginación de los niños, y para actividades que brindan asesoramiento profesional y apoyo a los padres. El personal de la Bebeteca capacita a las familias para convertirse en mediadores de lectura y para alentar el disfrute literario, artístico y recreativo, para que los padres puedan participar en actividades en la Bebeteca para luego implementarlas en casa. Alrededor de 40 familias asisten semanalmente.
En 2019, la Bebeteca lanzó un proyecto móvil para llevar sus servicios a instituciones que trabajan con niños en situaciones vulnerables, como centros de salud, centros de desarrollo infantil, jardines maternos e infantiles y otros. En ese mismo año, la Bebeteca móvil viajó 5 veces y tuvo alrededor de 15 familias visitando en cada ocasión.
Cuando se le preguntó sobre los beneficios, Viviana, una madre de hijas gemelas, compartió el impacto de la Bebeteca en el desarrollo de sus gemelas: "Desde el día en que nacieron Abril y Valentina, me preocupaba que no pudieran hablar o expresarse. Después de un año de ir y venir a los hospitales, el diagnóstico fue decepcionante. Esto cambió en abril de 2019, cuando nos reunimos con el equipo interdisciplinario de la Fundación Suzuki.
A 1 año y 8 meses, el desarrollo de las gemelas estaba muy por detrás de sus compañeros de edad. No podían decir más que "papá" o "mamá" y si alguien los tocaba, comenzaban a llorar.
Todos los lunes, pasamos los últimos 20 minutos de la sesión de cuidado temprano en la Fundación en la Bebeteca. Allí, las chicas buscan un libro que les guste. La maestra los lee un poco y luego se los llevan a casa. Lo mismo con los juguetes, peluches y títeres. Antes de dormir, las chicas dicen: "Libro, libro", y les leo. Y cuando lloran, les leo la historia y se calman.
Por sí solas, las chicas comenzaron a hojear los libros y a decir los nombres de los animales y a copiar sus sonidos. Tener materiales como libros y peluches les ayuda a pensar y hacer preguntas.”
La Bebeteca enriquece y expande la oferta educativa de la Fundación Suzuki de desarrollo y servicios para la primera infancia, educando e involucrando a los niños, capacitando y dando esperanza a las familias y los padres. Por su trabajo, la Bebeteca fue reconocida como una de las Bibliotecas en Acción de Argentina, 2018.
